As an award-winning Sustainable Community, The Cape and The Cape Community Farm set the standard for sustainable design and living, making them the perfect venues for hosting school visits. Our farmer, who is a Qualified Secondary School Teacher as well as a TAFE Trainer and Assessor, brings over 20 years of educational experience to the programs we offer. These programs are aligned with the Victorian F-10 and VCE Curriculum Framework, and feature rich and immersive educational experiences.

Our programmes provide cost-effective learning opportunities that cover a wide range of topics including; sustainable farming, closed-loop systems, solar passive housing, all-electric communities, and sustainable land use and conservation. These hands-on experiences offer students a comprehensive understanding of sustainability practices and solutions.

The Cape Experience (All ages and levels)

Duration: 1.5hrs,
Description: General Tour
This is a guided walk through The Cape development featuring the opportunity to visit an 8.5 rated solar passive house; a walk around of the award-winning landscape and wetlands; and a tour of the state-of-the-art community farm. 
  

The fee is $15.00* per student. Minimum fee for a small group is $250.

Farmer for A Day (primary years 4, 5, 6)

Duration: 2hrs
Description: Hands on in the farm
An intensive hands-on session in The Community Farm with the emphasis on gardening skills development. Students work in small teams on a short rotation cycling from one activity to the next, systematically learning about each component of simple farming routines.
Activities include: composting and worms; sowing seed and growing seedlings; planting seedlings; harvesting and washing produce.

Sprouting Enterprise (secondary years 7,8,9)

Duration: 4hrs
Description: Setup and run an enterprise
With the emphasis on enterprise creation and community engagement students learn efficient routines to run a vegetable and flower seedling sales enterprise and will learn the following skills: selecting and raising seedlings, potting, growing on, labelling, displaying, marketing strategies, sales and other business-related skills.
This program is delivered in an initial 2hr session followed up by a 1hr incursion and then a final 1hr follow-up zoom session.

Feeding Our Community (secondary years 7,8,9)

Duration: 3hrs
Description: Participate in a local food system
Students learn about food systems by engaging in a small-scale food system model in two 1.5hr sessions.
The first 1.5hr session covers the fundamentals involved in growing and producing vegetables efficiently and sustainably.
The second 1.5hr session involves students in the process of harvesting, washing, weighing, recording and then distributing the produce to a local food charity.

Sustainable Communities (secondary years 7,8,9)

Duration: 2hrs
Description: sustainable communities’ immersion
As an introduction to ecological and sustainable design, students will learn about the elements that make up a ‘sustainable community’, covering design aspects as demonstrated by The Cape. For example: pedestrian and cycle friendly landscape; landscape regeneration; solar passive house design; food production; community development; and more.

Regenerate (secondary years 9)

Duration: 3hrs
Description: Participate in regenerating the local landscape
With an emphasis on native bush regeneration, students will learn about the importance of revegetation through participating directly in the propagation of a selection of native indigenous plant species, then maintaining and planting them within the local landscape.
